Antonio and I had the privilege of visiting Israel in 2012 during date season. Fresh dates are even more delicious than dried ones! Our guide pointed out that date trees are the only ones that can grow with salt water for irrigation; and yet they produce the sweetest of fruits! How like our lives that should be.....producing sweet fruit, even when all that we receive from this old world is "salty".
Secondly, dates get sweeter as the tree gets older; contrary to most trees whose fruit decreases in quantity and quality with age. Psalm 92:12-14 confirms this! We should produce better and sweeter fruit as we get older! (not bitter and cantankerous!)
There are many, many more lessons to be learned. It is interesting to do a Bible study on palm trees (usually "Tamar" or date). Interestingly enough, the Portuguese word for "date" is "tamara"! The palms were used to build booths (Nehemiah 8:15); for decor (I Kings 6:29,32,35; Ezequiel 40:16; II Chronicles 28:15 and 3:5) for worship and praise (John 12:13; Revelation 7:9) and much more.
Let's be "Date Tree Christians"!
